Obituary of John Dalessandro
John Joseph Dalessandro, 80, of Corning, NY passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2018 with family by his side and under the care of Carefirst Hospice. John (known to his friends as JD and Joe to his family) fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pittston, PA on May 9, 1938 the son of the late John and Mary (Barletta) Dalessandro of Old Boston, PA.
John is survived by his children John (Melissa) and Lorraine Dalessandro and granddaughters Christina Dalessandro (Drew James) and Jonni Lynn Dalessandro (Carli Aiken), his wife Irene and stepson Jesse Roberts. As "Papa JD" he will be missed by granddaughters Logan, Catherine, Taylor, Hayle, Caitlyn and great granddaughters Melinda and Serenity from Irene's side of the family.
John always remained close to his sisters and brother and to their families. His surviving siblings are sisters Jean (Edward) Kizis of Corning NY, Theresa (Daniel) Ripa of Exeter PA, Liz (Fury) Derome of Pittston PA and brother Anthony (Deborah) Dalessandro of Old Boston, PA. John was predeceased by his sister Gloria (Louis d 2005) Ellmore of Dumfries VA who passed away earlier this year. John was proud to be Uncle Joe to 14 nieces and nephews.
Jennifer and Lynn Schack and Tonya Kizis were a great help with John's home care. He would not have been able to stay at home through his illness without their help. Debra Sabran accompanied Irene and John on almost every cancer treatment appointment and doctor's visit for the last two and a half years. Joshua Abbott, unofficial grandson, was an extraordinany help during JD's illness.
John was a 1956 graduate of Pittston Central Catholic High School in Pittston, PA. He attended his 50th reunion to the mutual joy of his classmates and himself.
John worked for Corning Incorporated from 1956 to 2000 and he was very proud of his Corning career. He retired as Supervisor of Melting at Sullivan Park in 1997 but stayed with Corning a few more years working as a consultant. He was honored to be named a Corning M&P Associate in 1996.
John was a hunter and avid fisherman. He loved playing ball on the local baseball and softball leagues. Some of the his happiest times involved sharing the lake house on Lamoka Lake with friends and family.
There will be a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 155 State Street in Corning on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11:00 am with an hour of calling there immediately before the Requiem Mass. After the service all are invited to a gathering of friends and family at the Marconi Lodge on Pulteney Street in Corning. Please join John's family for a last farewell.
