Franklin L. “Sonny” Russell, age 88, of Corning, NY passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Absolut Care of Three Rivers, Painted Post.
Sonny was born on April 11, 1930 in Corning, NY, the son of the late Frank B. and the late Mary (Veith) Russell. He married Barbara Themelis in 1952 at St. Mary's Church, Corning. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. After returning from the service, he began working for The Leader as an Intertype Operator and in sales for 41 years before his retirement in 1995.
Sonny was a lifetime member of All Saint’s Parish. In his early years, he coached his sons little league teams, as well as basketball at St. Mary’s Catholic School. He also had a knack for wallpapering – doing many side jobs over the years for his community. He enjoyed taking annual camping trips with his family, and most of all enjoyed the time spent with his many grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Russell of Corning, NY; daughter, Mary Kay (David) Edwards of Las Vegas, NV; five sons: Joseph (Vicki) Russell of Loma, CO, Gary (Leigh) Russell of TN, David (Cindy) Russell of Buffalo, NY, Robert (Lori) Russell of Youngstown, NY and Matthew (Jamie) Russell of Clemmons, NC; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; brother, Linwood (Jo Ann) Russell of Canandaigua, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his brother, George “Bill” Russell.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 155 State St., Corning, NY. Entombment will immediately follow at St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Park Ave., Corning, NY. Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
