Obituary of H. Terry, Jr.

H. James Terry, Jr. (Jim), age 84, of Horseheads, NY passed away peacefully at his home on August 1, 2018.

Jim was born on June 26, 1934 in Binghamton, NY, the son of the late Harry J., Sr. and the late Eleanor E. (Gross) Terry. He was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School, class of 1954. Upon graduation he joined the United State Marine Corps, serving in active duty from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1957. Jim served for seven months in the Marine detachment aboard the USS Midway CVA-41 during the 1955 mission to evacuate the Tachen Islands off the coast of China.  While onboard, he was selected to serve as the orderly to the ship’s captain. During a home leave from the Marines, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Barbara A. Hotchkiss on November 12, 1955 in Binghamton, NY.

While in the Marines, he qualified as Sharp Shooter and received advanced combat training in Company “A” First Infantry training regiment.  He quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant and during the last year of his active duty was stationed in North Carolina with the Military Police.

Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Jim worked at his father’s business, Star Dental Laboratory, Inc. of Binghamton, NY and took over the family business upon his father’s retirement.  Jim ran the business with partners for nearly 40 years before retiring and moving to Horseheads, NY to be close to family.

In 2004, when the USS Midway was decommissioned and became a museum, Jim and his son visited the aircraft carrier at its dock in San Diego, where he once again walked the ship’s familiar decks.

Jim was a classic car and military aircraft enthusiast, often attending antique car shows and airshows with his family.   He enjoyed movies, especially in the western and military genres.  Jim loved fishing and could spend hours dropping a line in local lakes, or even just spending time with his son and grandsons on the riverbank.  He was a die-hard sports fan and closely followed his teams — the New York Giants and the Yankees.

Jim loved spending every waking hour with his family and friends.  He was deeply devoted to his family and is survived by his loving wife, Barbara H. Terry of Horseheads, NY; daughter Lauren T. McCarthy; son, James E. Terry and his wife Holly; grandchildren: Brennan J. Terry and wife Madeleine, Sean P. Terry and partner Shayne, Steven R. Dunlap, and Kevin R. Dunlap; as well as a number of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his three sisters Marion Cline and husband Roger, Jeanne Fiske and husband Jack, and Ruth Roberts and her husband John.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00pm at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A memorial service with full military honors will immediately follow at 4:00pm, Pastor Veronica Seeley officiating.
