Obituary of JoAnn Stewart Schopf Evans

JoAnn Fae Stewart Schopf Evans, age 84, of Corning, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Robert Packer Hospital.  She was born on July 6, 1933 in Kistler, PA, the daughter of Frederick Calvin and Zella May (Lamberson) Stewart.  She married Reverend Donald E. Evans on February 24, 1968 at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Harrisburg, PA.  He predeceased her on March 5, 2014.

JoAnn graduated from Mount Union High School in Pennsylvania.  As the oldest daughter with 9 siblings, she helped significantly with her family’s upbringing in Kistler, and remained a mentor and friend to them throughout her life.  She lived in the Lancaster, PA area for many years, and in 1997 she and Don moved to Corning, NY to be closer to their daughter and her family.  In her 20’s and 30’s JoAnn worked as a telephone operator and secretary.  She was married for 5 years to Jim Schopf, and a widow for 9 years after he died around 1958.  She remained close to his parents until they died.  After she married Don in 1968 she loved being a wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother.  There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family.  Her favorite things included having sleepovers with her grandkids, being always available for them, and doing anything for and with them.  Her many hobbies included counted cross stitch, crocheting, quilting, card making and collecting cabochons – all of which she did with great passion.  JoAnn also loved the Lord deeply and enjoyed being involved with churches, bible study and many kinds of music.  Her generosity was boundless.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Savoy of Painted Post, grandchildren, Claudia Melissa, Gretchen Fae, and Matthew Christopher Savoy, former son-in-law, Christopher Savoy of Corning, brothers, Frederick G. (Patricia) Stewart of Mt. Union, PA, Edwin (Laura Mae) Stewart of Winchester, VA and D. Phil Stewart of Mt. Union, PA, sisters-in-law, Pat Stewart of Elmira, June Stewart of Mt. Union, PA, and Twila Evans of Bethlehem, PA, brother-in-law, Max Lane of Three Springs, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews.  JoAnn was predeceased by her brothers, Robert, Dale, and Ronald Stewart, and Ken (Gladys) Lamberson, sisters, Gladys (Jimmy) Lane and Carolyn Lane, brother-in-law, Robert Evans, and sister-in-law, Darlene Stewart.
