Obituary of Warren Rice
Warren G. Rice, age 82, a resident of Rincon, Peurto Rico for the past 13 years, passed away Friday, January 20, 2006 after a lengthy illness.
Warren was born in Corning on September 9, 1923 to Stuart J. Rice and Flossa (Wells) Rice.
He was an acitve sports player in school and was involved in baseball, basketball, football,and track. He graduated from Northside High, class of 1940.
He married Lucille Gurnsey on April 16, 1943. He was a top-turret gunner on a B-24 assigned to the 5th Air Force in the Pacific during WWII.
In 1954 he became a partner in Rice & Sons, East Corning, as a plumbing & heating contractor; working with his father, Stuart, and brother, Robert for 19 years.In 1962 he became a Past Master of Corning Masonic Lodge 1038. In 1971, and again in 1986 Warren had received open heart surgery. In 1973, he obtained a Lindal Cedar Homes franchise for 20 years, designing, selling, and contracting cedar homes, using his home as a model. He retired in 1993 when he an his wife moved to Peurto Rico to be near their daughter and granddaughter.
Warren kept active with his interest in sports and went on to play for semi-pro basketball teams, one winning the NYS Championship in 1952 who was the first team to play in the Corning War Memorial Stadium. In 1985 he was inducted into the Corning Sports Hall of Fame for baseball. He coached several Little League baseball teams and influenced his sons athletic activities, especially track. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Warren is survived by his loving family: Wife Lucille, of 62 years; Son, Richard (Debbie) of Naples, FL; Daughter,Cindie of Rincon, Puerto Rico ; Grandchildren, Lauren of Ft. Myers FL, David of Tampa FL, Nani of Santa Barbara, CA,and Sydney (Andrew) Cadwell, and great granddaughter Sylvia Cadwell of Eugene Oregon; Brother, Robert (Betty) of Corning; a life long friend, Mark Closen of Rincon Puerto Rico; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Friday from 1-3, 7-9 at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY.The memorial service will be Saturday at 11:00 am at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, with Rev. Kathleen M. Turnbole officiating.Burial will be in Coopers Plains Cemetery, Painted Post.
