Obituary of Iris Smith
Iris B. Smith age 84, of 134 Dwight Avenue in Corning, NY died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at Corning Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born in Corning on January 6, 1921, to Robert and Ruth (Gould) Benedict. She was a graduate of Northside High School (1937) and the Dermal Way School of Beauty Culture. Iris married Lawrence W. Smith in 1938 and was preceded in death by him in 1986. She had been a Red Cross Nurses Aide during World War II. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School, was a pastoral care giver, and a den mother for the Boy Scouts through the church. She volunteered many hours for Corning Meals On Wheels, loved gardening, oil painting, and listening to music. She was a past member of the Quota Club International and had worked for Corning Fiber Box for several years. She owned and operated her own beauty shop in Corning for almost 60 years. Iris was honored by the Grace United Methodist Womens Special Recognition Pin.
Her survivors include a daughter, Jule (Phillip) Cleary of Painted Post; three sons, Jeffrey (Maryann) Smith of Corning, E. Thomas (Linda) Smith of Hinesville, GA, and Andrew (Melissa) Smith of Charleston, West Virginia; two sisters, Verlee Andrews of Campbell and Beverly Reynolds of Boise, Idaho; a brother, David (Judy) Benedict of Corning; grandchildren, Kimberly Hoffman, Jennifer Davis, Kevin Borak, Timothy Smith, Nathan Smith, Meghan Smith, Emily Smith and Andrea Smith; great grandchildren, Zachary, Jordan, Matthew and Shelby Hoffman, and Lauren and Tyler Davis; several nieces and nephews. Iris was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Benedict, and by two sisters, Thelma Tawney and Jane McFall.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1:00 - 5:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street in Corning. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at Grace United Methodist Church, 191 Bridge Street in Corning with the Reverends Kathleen M. Turnbole and Gilbert Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Rural Home Cemetery in Big Flats, NY.
