The world became a darker place and Heaven all the sweeter on December 20, 2018. After a heroic almost ten year battle with a rare neurological disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Shaun Michael Cunningham left his broken body behind and is now in the presence of Jesus his Savior. Despite the ravaging this disease took on his mind and body, Shaun never complained; he smiled until his final days.
Shaun was born August 20, 1954, a hot summer day. The first of seven children, Shaun spent his childhood and teen years looking out for his younger brothers and sisters. He loved to play baseball and eventually coached Little League as a young man. Shaun loved life, loved music, loved laughter. In 1976, he met Donna Jean Flegal, the woman whom he would love for 42 years. The two were married February 28, 1981, best friends and soul mates in this crazy world.
In 1985, Shaun’s life changed dramatically. On his knees in his living room, Shaun came to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. From that day on he was a different man. Shaun lived his life for his Lord first and his family second. He was an avid Bible scholar, a fierce prayer warrior and a devoted husband, father and papa. Shaun’s only goal in life was to see the name of the Lord praised and love on his family.
Shaun was a graduate of SUNY Geneseo. He was a strong leader and spent many years supervising numerous employees and businesses. But he desired to serve the Lord more than anything. He had a heart for children and it showed in the way he ministered to and poured himself into the students of King’s Way Christian Academy as principal. After graduating from Bible Institute, Shaun became the Associate Pastor of Central Baptist Church. He loved every moment of serving and did so in many capacities: singing specials, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, preaching, even painting and cleaning. Shaun’s greatest love second only to the Lord is his wife Donna. Shaun was a protective, doting, loving husband and the two shared not enough time together raising their family, serving the Lord and living life. Shaun loved his daughters, Jessica and Jennifer greatly. He spent much of his time doing the things his “three girls” wanted to do. He was always happy as long as he could be with his family. Later in life, Shaun took up a passion, perhaps an obsession, for fishing. Anyone who was privileged to know Shaun knew he was a man of great faith, tremendous generosity and compassion with a unique sense of humor, zeal for life and unmatchable knowledge of a little bit about most everything.
Shaun leaves behind a family who is devastated by his home going but thrilled that he is now whole again and celebrating this Christmas season with his Heavenly Father: his wife of 37 years Donna, daughters Jessica (David) Burdick and Jennifer (Jamie) Tostanoski, grandchildren Lydia and Benjamin Tostanoski and Bryson Burdick, mother Joanne Cunningham, siblings Kevin Cunningham, Martin Cunningham, Brian (Carol) Cunningham, Margaret (Bob) Morgan and Laurie (Eric) Soehnlein, special Aunt Sheila (Eugene) Brautigan and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Shaun was blessed with an amazing support system that allowed him to remain comfortable in his own home until the very end which included: his wife Donna, caregiver Eunice Morse, Care First nurse Annette Gibson and primary care team who stayed with him Dr. Michael Cilip and PA Megan and Karen and Jim Hough at Market Street Apothecary, Pastors Ronald Aebersold and Jon Pitman and church family of Central Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his father Donald Cunningham and his sister Kathleen Lindbloom.
