Dalton Reede Cates, 72, of Greenridge Drive Painted Post was born on July 10, 1933, the son of the late Jesse Phillip and Clare (Sorrell) Cates. He grew up in Durham, North Carolina and was active in the Grey Stone Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Soloist, and Senior Deacon. Dalton worked his way through Duke University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. During the Korean War, he was given a special status and worked for Wright Machinery Co. in Durham on Government contracts.
In 1956, he married Joan Gregory Gery and they moved to Florida for five years while working as an engineer for Florida Power and Light.
He was contracted in 1962 and in January 1963 moved to Raleigh, NC being employed by Corning, Inc.. While in Raleigh, he was active in Little League, Tabernacle Baptist Church, and Parent Teacher Associations.
In January 1972, he was promoted by Corning, Inc. and came to Corning, NY where he has lived for the past 33 years being a very active participant in this community.
Don retired four years ago after forty years with Corning, Inc. but continued work in Washington DC in the Malcolm Baldridge Foundation, New York State Empire Program, and Sister City Programs of Japan, Ukraine, and Italy.
Don proudly worked in manufacturing, marketing, and Quality functions spanning multiple business units within Corning, Incorporated. His international contacts were expansive with friendships in Japan, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, China, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Don was past United Way Campaign Chairman for Steuben County and remained active on the board. As a long standing member of the Rotary Club, Don was awarded the Paul Harris Award and remained dedicated to giving back to the community.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan; children, Mark Reede and his wife, Meg, Carol Wensel, and Jesse Phillip and his wife, Kim. Proudly he loved his children and six special grandchildren, Alexa Paige, Zachary Thomas, Austin Phillip, Ashley Nichole, Jamie Kenyon, and Justin Reede. He is survived by a sister, Carolyn Cates Greene and her husband, Daylon of Mt. Airy, NC; neice, Joan Elizabeth Folger and her husband, Harry; nephew, David Christopher Greene and his wife, Jennifer. Also, Meredith Wilhoit, Bailey Wilhoit, Zion Greene, and Zoe Greene.
Dalton was so blessed with so many relatives from North Carolina, especially Mrs. Virginia Gery Pope, Aunt Ginny, Mrs. Florine Gery Noble, sister in law, Elianor and Gerald Kamp of Hickory, NC and Barbara and Jim Pierce of Raleigh, NC.
Daltons family will receive friends on Sunday, September 25, 2005 at the Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning from 2 4 and 6- 8pm. The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday at the Funeral Home at 11:00am. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Flowers will be graciously received, but donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
