Lester Terry, age 84, of Painted Post was called to rest with the Lord on Sunday, July 31, 2005
Mr. Terry was born July 10, 1921 in Trumansburg, NY the son of the late Leslie and Florence (Van Dyke) Terry. Lester lived in Trumansburg until he joined the Army in 1942. He served 3 years and 2 months in the Army Air Corp during WWII, of which 16 months was in a German Prisoner of War Camp. After his discharge, he relocated to Painted Post where in 1945 he married his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Cole) Terry. He had a 37 year career as a machinist with Ingersoll Rand in Painted Post. He retired in 1983.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Terry ; daughters, Cynthia Ann (Robert) Franzen and Maryellen (Donald) Evans; grandchildren, Kenneth, David, and Terry Elizabeth; sisters, Marian Terry Cole and Virginia Terry Leonard; brother, Johnny Terry; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald, Robert "Bobby", and Arthur "Artie" (KIA-WWII); and his beloved grandson, Martin.
Lester was a strong supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)and the Disabled Americans Veterans (DAV).His military experiences shaped much of his life. During the war, he was a member of the 306 Bomb Group and a waist gunner on a B-17 when the plane was shot down over Germany. He spent 16 months as a POW in Stalag XVII-B in Krems, Austria and maintained a life long friendship with men who had also been POWs. He had two brothers who also served in WWII, one in the Pacific and one in Italy. While Lester was a prisoner of war in Germany his brother Artie was killed while serving in Italy.
Lester's family will receive friends on Saturday, August 6, 2005 at 11:00am for his Memorial Service at the Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street. Interment will be private.
