Marilyn J. Lewis, age 89, of Corning, NY passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Corning Hospital surrounded by family.
Marilyn was born on March 7, 1928 in Painted Post, NY, the daughter of the late William L. and the late Ruth (Roland) Cunningham. She was a graduate of Painted Post High School, class of 1945. She was employed by Ingersoll-Rand before becoming a principal's secretary for the Corning/Painted Post School District, retiring in 1994 with 34 years of service.
She was a lifelong member of the Caton United Methodist Church. In her free time, she enjoyed bowling and playing cards. She was a member of a card club for over 60 years with many of her closest girlfriends. Marilyn also enjoyed planning and attending many of the Painted Post High School reunions. When she wasn't busy planning events at home, she took the time to pursue her passion of traveling – visiting the Caribbean, Jamaica, Hawaii, the West Coast, Anguilla and her favorite spot of Old Lyme, CT. Her greatest love in life was her family. Her three children were her center – and later extended that love to include her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was always generous and selfless when it came to her family and always looked forward to holidays spent with those she loved the most. In her later years, her daughter Chris and son-in-law Daryl made it possible for Marilyn to stay in her home while faithfully and lovingly caring for her.
She is survived by three daughters: Christine (Daryl) VanWoert of Corning, NY, Kathy (Jack) Flake of Hebron, KY and Michele (Gregory) Knapp of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA,; grandchildren: Scott (Dawn) VanWoert, Brett (Heidi) Van Woert, Conley Flake, Stephanie (Nick) Dorsey, Briana (Jeremy) Rhyne; step grandchildren: Elizabeth (Matthew) Hunton, Allison (Jason) Bennett; great grandchildren: Scott, Jr., Brittany (Erica), Blake, Jack, Cole, Carter, Caroline, Madison, Kate; step great-grandchildren: Jessica, Kaitelynn, Abigail, Jason, Isabella, Felicity, Charlotte; great-great grandchildren: Brooke, Andrew and Kamron; several nieces and nephews; and special kitties Lucky and Molly. Marilyn was known as "Nana" not only by her grandchildren but to numerous others, young and old.
In addition to her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by her sisters: Virginia (Jack) Saunders, Beverly Cunningham, Janice (Joseph) Moriarty; great grandson, Michael VanWoert; nephew, John Saunders; and former late husband, David R. Lewis.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY.
