William A. Walker, age 102, passed away peacefully at Absolut Care of Three Rivers on Sunday, July 23, 2017. Bill was born on December 21, 1914 to Elisha and Isabella (Atkinson) Walker in Scranton, PA. He married Edith (Williams) on June 7, 1941 in Peckville, PA. Edith predeceased him on May 5, 2003.
As a youngster during the Great Depression, Bill left high school to help support his family by going to work in the coal mines. Later he served in the US Army during WWII, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European/African/Middle Eastern Ribbon and WWII Victory Ribbon. After the war he was employed for 35 years with the AutoLite/PrestoLite Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY, where he was also active in the local UAW Union. After retirement Bill and Edith moved to Corning and spent many a morning at the FoodMart café or afternoons playing cards at the Senior Center. He was always a gentleman and liked by everyone.
Bill was also a sportsman and an avid fan of all sports, with a soft spot for the underdogs.
Bill is survived by his sons: William J. (Jean) of Painted Post, NY, Donald R. (Linda) of California, MD; granddaughters: Beth Heidrich (Fred) of Horseheads, NY, Amy Sanz (Mike) of Knoxville, TN, Tracy Canniff (Chris) of California, MD, Robin Stanka (Ken) of Waldorf, MD; 10 great grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.
At the family's request there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
