Evalyne N. Speeckaert, age 94, of Painted Post, NY, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Guthrie Corning Hospital of Corning, NY. Evalyne was born July 30, 1922 in Manhattan, NY to John and Stella Novotine. She married Charles P. Speeckaert on April 20, 1946 and was predeceased by him November 30, 1999. Evalyne also proudly served her country during the WWII era in the U.S. Navy.
Evalyne was lovingly referred to as "Tootsie" by close friends and family in New York City and Hazleton, PA. She and her parents owned and ran a building supply store. Evalyne was incredibly smart and could calculate numbers faster than they could be entered into a calculator. Not only was she smart, but she had an amazing memory, remembering everything and everyone. She loved reading mysteries, and had read hundreds of books in her long life. She made friends everywhere she went with her outgoing, sassy personality, and continuously amused and delighted those close to her with her outspoken and honest opinions. She enjoyed playing games such as gin rummy, Pokeno, and Rummikub, and would always rush everybody else's turn while taking ages to take her own. She loved and was extremely proud of her family, which was evident in the way she would smile and look at them. She had a few special friends whom were very close to her heart by the names of David, Carol, Walter, Jane, and Jackie.
Evalyne was a proud member of the Red Hatters society for many years, making very good friends and going on many trips. She loved traveling and had been on at least 12 cruises, the last of which she spent with a good portion of her beloved family.
She is survived by her son: John (Gladys) Speeckaert of Painted Post, five grandchildren: Krista (Ray) Gleason of Corning, Jennifer (Charlie) Ross of Horseheads, Joshua Shepard of Painted Post, Caryn Speeckaert of Elmira, Leslie Speeckaert of Charlottesville, VA; 6 great grandchildren: Chelsi (Josh) Dieg, Northampton, PA, Alexa Gleason, Miranda Ross, Jenna Gleason, Austin Ross, Ariana Gleason; great-great granddaughter: Parker Quinn Dieg; and her beloved four legged grandchildren: Cooper and Martin.
Evalyne lived a long, happy, love filled life. She was full of an energy that is unlike any other, and took full advantage of every day she had. She will long be remembered and celebrated by those lucky enough to have known her.
