Biography

Shirley M. Barber, age 73, of Beaver Valley, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Shirley was born October 6, 1938 in Carnwath, PA. She was the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Fleck-Brown) Collins. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Barber in 2007.

Shirley had a strong sense of family and loved planning dinners and picnics. She loved reading true crime books, watching Nancy Grace, playing slots and was an avid sports fan- Penn State, the Mets, NASCAR and The Little League World Series. Shirley loved to travel- she cherished her trips to Michigan, California, Atlantic City, Niagara Falls, Las Vegas and Florida. Her Saturday mornings were spent hunting for the next big bargain and Friday lunches were spent with the Ole Ladies Club.

She is survived by three sons: David Barber of Westland , MI, Mark (Nancy) Barber of Horseheads, Skip Barber of Beaver Valley; two sisters: Linda Mapes of Watkins Glen and Peggy Lund of Bakersfield , CA; brother: Hugh Gallaher of Painted Post. She also has six grandchildren: Matthew Heymann of Horseheads, Samuel Barber of Beaver Valley, Alexander Barber of Beaver Valley, Katie Heymann of Horseheads, Lacey Hallock and Leah Hallock both of Tennessee. Along with her husband and Parents, Shirley was also predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

Calling hours will be held on January 18, 2012 from 3-5 PM at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14 E. Pulteney Street, Corning. A memorial service will take place immediately following the calling hours at Carpenter's Funeral Home.
