Biography
Jack L. Harter, age 82, of Elmira, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was born on April 8, 1929 in Hornell, NY the son of Guy and Hazel (Peck) Harter. Jack served in the U.S. Army as a medic stationed in Guam from 1947-1949. He was employed by Corning Glass Works as a machinist with 55 years of service. He was past President of the Corning Lions Club and past President and Secretary of the Southern Tier Retired Lions Club where he received numerous awards for his service. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-laws, Karen (Carmen) Spart of Arizona, Susan (Joseph) Longo of Georgia, Tracey (Jeff) Phillips of North Carolina, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jack was predeceased by his daughter Linda Bachman, his two sisters Elsie Everett and Jane Nesbit, his wife of 22 years Laura (Crane) Harter and his beloved dog Carmel. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elmira Christian Center located at 235 East Miller Street, Elmira, NY. Burial will take place at the Hope Cemetery Annex in Corning at 10:00 a.m. on January 24, 2012. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Corning Chapter of the ASPCA.
