Biography

John L. Fleming, age 65, of Corning, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born on July 7, 1946 in Corning, the son of the late Harry and Mattie (Jones) Fleming. He married Rosa May Keck on September 7, 1974 in Corning. She predeceased him on December 30, 2002.

John retired from Corning, Inc. in 2001 following 35 years of service. He later worked at Southern Tier Logistics, and then Wal-Mart. He was a member of the East Corning Fire Department for 15 years, having served as Chief for 5 years. John coached girls Cinderella softball. He enjoyed bowling, NASCAR, and football, especially the Buffalo Bills. He liked to travel and spend time with his family.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Amy Lynn and Shafiq Niaz of Greenville, SC, and Chrissy and Gary Hankinson of Savona; his significant other, Ruth Stratton of Addison; sister and brother-in-law, Annette and William Walker of Arizona; grandchildren, Brandon Fleming, Danielle, Sharon, and Allison Hankinson, and Ashlie and Shyanne Naylor; extended family, Bud Keck and Mary Ann Keck, both of Corning, Dan and Linda Hamilton of Enoree, SC, canine companion, Lady, Brian Stratton of Ithaca, Kim Stratton of Castle Creek, NY, Todd Stratton of Addison; and several nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his brother, Harry Fleming and by his mother and step-father, Mattie and Lee Shumway.

Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14 East Pulteney Street in Corning on Friday, January 13, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm. John's funeral service will follow there at 8:00 pm. Burial at Coopers Plains Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
