 |  Luther J. Bates, Sr., age 81, of Beaver Dams, formerly of Bath, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Corning Hospital. He was born on September 28, 1928 in Allentown, PA, the son of Luther William and Ellen Phillips Bates. Luther retired from Corning, Inc. in 1992, and he was always a practical joker. He enjoyed cars and going to car shows. He loved horses, the outdoors, playing cards, and his winters in Florida. Luther is survived by his significant other, Mildred LeBaron of Beaver Dams; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Jennifer Bates of Erin, Richard and Sandra Bates of Horseheads, Robert and Roxane Bates of Erin, and John and Vicky Bates of Erin; sister, Peggy Koppen of Elyria, OH; and step-daughters, Judy (Gary) Lewis of Campbell, Joyce (Jerry) Hamilton of Addison, and Nancy (Paul) Mortzhine of Lindley. He also has grandchildren, Toni, Dan, Tammy, Joey, Rob, Jason, Bucky, Victoria, and Joseph; eighteen great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14 East Pulteney Street in Corning on Thursday, July 8, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Luther's memorial service will be held there following calling hours at 8:00 pm. Burial will take place at Seamans Cemetery in Savona on Friday at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations in Luther's name to Bradford Volunteer Fire (Ambulance) Company, Inc., 7603 County Route 20, Bradford, NY, 14815.  | |||
