Our History

In 1929, Paul L. Carpenter purchased the Waldo Funeral Home at 61 East Pulteney Street, Corning, next door to today’s Pizza Hut Restaurant. Paul renamed the funeral home, Carpenter-Waldo Funeral Home. In 1931, the funeral home moved to its present location at 14 East Pulteney Street. In 1934, it was again renamed to its present name, Carpenter’s Funeral Home.

Paul L. Carpenter purchased Stevens Funeral Home in Painted Post in 1955. Paul Eldred Carpenter became a partner with his father in 1960. Paul L. remained active in managing the Painted Post business until after the flood of 1972 which totally devastated the Painted Post funeral home.

In 1962, Paul Eldred Carpenter opened a funeral home in South Corning, which also remained until after the flood in June of 1972.

After the flood, the South Corning and Painted Post funeral homes were closed. The main funeral home at 14 East Pulteney Street was completely renovated.

Paul Eldred Carpenter then sold the business to Edward Canedy, who later sold the business to the Lowewen Group. In 2006 the funeral home was acquired by Service Corporation International, the largest North American provider of funeral, cremation, and crematory services. SCI operated Carpenter’s under its Dignity Memorial brand.

Brothers, David and Jon Carpenter, grandsons of the founder, purchased Carpenter’s in December 2007, once again making Carpenter’s Funeral Home LLC., locally owned and managed by the original Carpenter family.

“We are passionate about offering the same high quality standards of service, professionalism, and personal care to the families we serve that our father Paul Eldred and grandfather, Paul L. Carpenter extended to every family they served.”………..David & Jon Carpenter
